The urban dictionary’s definition of swag is “appearance, style, or the way a person presents themselves”. In other words in order to have swag, you must buy clothes you can’t afford and have an outrageous hair style that will ensure you remain unemployed for the foreseeable future. My definition of swag is your inner confidence, that spark that makes you feel unique and special. By the end of my final year at university I didn’t even want to go outside, fearing that people would see how sad I had become. The headache of my dissertation and the endless pieces of coursework meant that I had become depressed. I lost all interest in myself. I hated all my clothes and my hair never seemed to look right. In hindsight I realised that my clothes hadn’t changed but how I saw myself had. My feelings of academic inadequacy had also taken over my personal life. As soon as my last coursework was in I began to rediscover myself, and so can you. Lets get your swag back.
Having confidence is so much more then being able to speak to people or wear nice clothes. Confidence controls the opportunities that you allow into your life. Low confidence means that you will be less adventurous and more likely to sit on the side lines. As we all know, being a graduate in this current climate is tough and you need to be able to stand out and get noticed. The first thing you need to do is look at your appearance. Would you employ you, or more importantly would you want to be friends with you? If the answer is no then you need to make some changes. If you notice that you frown a lot make an effort to smile more. If you feel that your general appearance needs an over haul, take a trusted friend and go shopping. This is not about maxing out your already delicate bank balance. This is about adding some much needed essentials to your wardrobe so that you can feel special.
The next few months are going to be a crucial transitioning period in your life. This is the time to fall in love with yourself. Spend time with loved ones and pick up hobbies that you didn’t have time for. Do anything that will enrich your life and make you feel good about yourself. As time goes by, you will find that you become more comfortable with yourself and your abilities. Almost like magic you will become the person you have always wanted to be, and ready to enter the world of work. A confident person is a successful person- never forget that.
